Captured from above Hutt Lagoon in Western Australia, this piece came from a moment where the landscape stopped feeling like a place and started feeling like a drawing. From the air, the salt lake breaks into bold colour fields and sharp dividing lines, and I was instantly reminded of the kind of curious, carefree marks a kid might make on a page without overthinking it.

The crossing lines and soft blocks of pink, gold and pale tones give the scene a playful structure, almost like a giant abstract artwork laid out in the middle of the outback. With no horizon and no obvious sense of scale, the image shifts from landscape photography into something far more graphic and imaginative. It becomes less about geography and more about shape, colour and feeling.

I wanted this aerial photograph to carry a sense of childlike wonder, that feeling of looking at something and letting your imagination take over before logic steps in. It is about rediscovering the joy of seeing, where a real Australian landscape becomes abstract art from above.
