Player One
From $450Shinjuku, Tokyo, Japan
Looking down over Shinjuku at dusk, the rooftops are crowded with glowing signs, from a giant red arcade invader to stacked shop billboards. The idea behind this series was to show Tokyo from above like a video game map, every rooftop a little level of its own. With the arcade sign front and centre, this one felt like the perfect start screen.
Fuji Dusk
From $450Tokyo, Japan
As the sky fades from teal to deep red over Tokyo, the silhouette of Mount Fuji rises on the horizon. In the foreground the city is switching on for the night, neon signs glowing and the expressway turning into ribbons of red and white light. A rare clear evening, when the mountain and the city sit together in one frame.
Between the Gates
From $450Kyoto, Japan
Framed between the vermilion torii gates of a Japanese shrine, a lone figure pauses and looks back. The gates in the foreground melt into soft streaks of red and orange, leaving just a narrow window onto the path beyond. One of my favourite street portraits from Japan, quiet and a little mysterious.
Neon Current
From $450Tokyo, Japan
Long streams of light pour along an elevated expressway in Tokyo, curving past office towers lit floor by floor. A neon TOKYO sign glows from the building across the road, and the street trees below are wrapped in tiny white lights. Shot from high above on a winter night, it captures the constant motion of a city that never really slows down.
Grey Heron
From $450Kyoto, Japan
A grey heron stands on the tiled roof of an old wooden building, perfectly still in the soft afternoon light. Blurred lanterns glow behind it, and the curved roof tiles give the whole frame a calm rhythm. Herons are a common sight in Japan's cities, and this one seemed completely at ease watching the world go by below.
Night Game
From $450Shinjuku, Tokyo, Japan
Tucked between the towers of Shinjuku, a rooftop batting cage glows green under its orange frame. From high above it looks like a tiny playing field dropped into the city, surrounded by air conditioners, water tanks and neon. Part of my series looking down on Tokyo like a video game map, where every rooftop hides something unexpected.
East Wing
From $450Shinjuku, Tokyo, Japan
A giant red neon sign climbs the corner of a camera store in Shinjuku, its characters glowing against the night. Below, the shop front spills cool light onto the street as a lone shopper walks past. For a photographer there is something fitting about this one, a temple to cameras lit up like a beacon.
Side Quest
From $450Shinjuku, Tokyo, Japan
Narrow lanes of bars and restaurants glow orange and red between the dark rooftops of Shinjuku. A few people wander through the laneway far below, tiny against the stacked buildings and signs. Seen from above at night, the city starts to look like the map of a video game, full of hidden streets waiting to be explored.
Last Orders
From $450Tokyo, Japan
A corner izakaya in Tokyo glows with rows of lanterns, bright signs and a grinning statue holding a giant skewer above the street. Below, a couple of people pause on the footpath as the night carries on around them. Japanese street corners like this are pure theatre after dark, and this one was too good to walk past.
Sunstrike
From $450Shinjuku, Tokyo, Japan
Late afternoon sun catches the curved orange facade of a building in Shinjuku, while everything around it sinks into shadow. A big rooftop sign sits on top like a crown. From high above the city, the light only touched this face for a few minutes, turning an ordinary building into the brightest thing in view.
Overworld
From $450Shinjuku, Tokyo, Japan
A wider view over the rooftops of Shinjuku at night, with lit lanes weaving between the blocks and neon spilling onto the streets. Air conditioners and water tanks crowd every roof, giving the scene a dense, built texture. This is the overview frame of my Tokyo series, the whole city laid out like a game world seen from above.
Yasaka
From $450Yasaka Pagoda, Kyoto, Japan
The Yasaka Pagoda rises above the quiet stone lanes of Higashiyama in Kyoto, lanterns glowing as night settles in. Part of my vector series, where real photographs from my travels are reworked into flat layers of colour.
