Captured deep in Haast Pass on New Zealand’s South Island, Haast brings together moody light, ancient forests, and flowing water in a single frame. Shooting in this area is always a challenge with the constantly shifting weather, but that is what gives it so much character. On this day, a break in the mist allowed a soft beam of light to hit the waterfall and the surrounding trees, lifting the scene just enough without losing the dark atmosphere that defines the region. Haast Pass is one of the wildest and least disturbed parts of New Zealand, and this piece tries to capture that raw, untouched feeling.
