Hamersley Gorge, Western Australia

Karijini National Park never fails to deliver something dramatic, and this image from the Hamersley Gorge region was one of those unexpected moments. The twisted folds of ancient rock seem to wrap around the still water like a sculpture shaped over millions of years, which, in truth, it is. This section of the Pilbara is raw, textured and intensely beautiful. It’s no wonder Karijini has become one of Western Australia’s most iconic inland landscapes.

I shot this in the soft light just after sunrise, when the shadows still added depth to the ridges and the contrast between warm stone and cool water brought everything to life. Karijini has a special place in my heart and features numerous times in my International Print Series, as it represents that mix of isolation and power I’m always drawn to.

If you’ve never explored the gorges in this region, it’s hard to describe the scale and feeling they inspire. It’s not your average bushwalk. It feels more like wandering through the earth’s own gallery, where nature’s palette spills across walls of iron-rich rock.
